Synthetic Opals: What are they?

Updated: Apr 23, 2019

#Opals are a naturally occurring amorphous solid. Along with pink tourmaline it is the #birthstone for the month of October.

Contrary to what may come to mind when you hear the word "synthetic", it does not mean fake when it comes to opals. To be classed as 'synthetic' the stone will be a man made version of a material that occurs in nature.

A synthetic opal will have the same chemical composition as a naturally occurring opal and therefore they have an almost identical appearance to the naked eye.

As a general rule, if you are buying an opal that is set in #silver it is safe to assume that it is synthetic. (This rule also applies for turquoise)

At present, all of the opals in our range are synthetic. We have them set in both #Sterlingsilver and #9ctgold
